Leeds United head coach speaks to the media ahead of this weekend’s clash between the Whites and table-topping Arsenal

Leeds’ opponents this weekend have dropped just three points in the Premier League this season and remain unbeaten in this year’s edition of the UEFA Europa League. Arsenal visit Elland Road on Sunday with Leeds already on a five-game winless streak.

It promises to be Jesse Marsch’s sternest test as Leeds head coach this season, and perhaps his most difficult opponent since the 4-0 defeat to Manchester City late last season. The American vowed that the team would begin to pick up results during his post-match press conference at Crystal Palace last weekend, reiterating his belief in the squad and their ability to avoid a similar scenario to last year in which the Whites narrowly staved off relegation.

Arsenal rested star striker Gabriel Jesus during their midweek Europa League encounter with Bodo/Glimt, as well as leaving a handful of first-team players in the UK ahead of that trip. Marsch is set to join reporters from 1:30pm this afternoon in his pre-match press conference at Leeds’ training base Thorp Arch.

Updates to follow on injuries and team selection throughout the afternoon.

Marsch on attacking transfers

We’re going to have a meeting in a couple of weeks about the winter transfer window. It’s a little early to discuss these things. However, that was clearly a target of ours and we will assess the attacking part of the field. I think the young group of attacking players we have is really exciting. When they’re playing with the 21s and training with us, they’re showing that quality every day, it makes me think ‘what is the right time to let these guys go’. I could have been riskier or braver with some of the younger players if results had gone our way. I’m trying to evaluate every week what bites to give these players

There’s dialogue out there about Plan A, Plan B. And for me that comes from people who don’t know what this requires because everything that we do is about being good at Plan A, and knowing when to slip to Plan B, or C or D. It can be use of formations, subs, starting line-ups, how you choose to press a team, how you manipulate your style of play for what your opponent’s going to present. Every single week includes Plan A through Plan Z and for anyone to assume that good managers and good coaches don’t have other ideas to be pragmatic would be incorrect

I spoke to Patrick at one point to say ‘we have to manage you’, it’s normal that after such a long time out. I think he’s fit and healthy right now. Today he was given a down day, a regen day, he didn’t train.

Marsch on job pressure

I think the support I have internally at this club is better than I’ve had anywhere I’ve been in my life. I know that when you lose, questions arise, that’s normal. And I accept that. And it’s my responsibility to lose as little as possible. So, that’s the job, I’m not afraid of that. I believe that I’m the man to do the job. With my staff, with my team, with the ownership, we’re all together - it empowers me to do the job

Marsch on contract extensions

To be totally honest with you, I’m not always in tune with those things. I actually prefer not to know contract situations with players. Sometimes when I hear contract details like now, I don’t like it. Contracts mean a lot to people but again I try to stay focused on the personal relationships

Marsch on attacking options

I think we have a bit of an attacking core as all potential threats in the way we want to play. We started with Rodrigo and Patrick against Palace and I think there’s a lot of games we can do that. Luis, Jack, Brenden have all had good seasons. I think Cree Summerville is emerging more and more into that group. I’ll have to make decisions based on match-plans and opponents

Marsch on struggling to find consistency

Those are excuses. My job as a manager is to always maximise potential and to use more time or less time to prepare ourselves to get better and better. For example we hadn’t had time to do man-down tactics and it helped us against Villa. Always trying to use times to make us better. Partly innovation at times, and creativity and discipline and experience to understand what’s necessary at every moment

Marsch on Arsenal title contenders

You have to say yes, they’ve looked very strong and played against good opponents. I always do a thorough job of scouting, we know they’re a good team and they have quality. I also like when teams and coaches improve and grow together, I think that’s what’s happened with Arsenal. To be back at the top of the table shows they’ve been able to find a process and stuck with it.

Marsch on beating Arsenal

It will be a monumental task

Marsch on Sinisterra

That’s important because he’s one of the guys in the attacking half of the field who brings calmness.
