I found it quite surprising to see Dan James depart Leeds United for a loan move to Fulham on transfer deadline day.

But such is the immediacy of football, perhaps he has had to make a split second and on the spot decision regarding his near future.

With the World Cup coming up, he could ill afford to be a bit part player in September, October and running into November leading up to the World Cup which is a huge occasion in any footballer's life.

Maybe that was part of that and his pace and trickery out wide does lend itself to the way that Fulham play.

He was part of that eternal conundrum at Leeds of last season of who plays upfront and he's not a striker, he's a wide man.

He was getting moved around a little bit.

Of course, a player has still got to perform when they are in the team but I can absolutely see why the move to Fulham would make sense for him.

But I can also see the frustration for Leeds fans with regards to him being at the club, chasing him to be at the club and how quickly it has turned around for him to head out of the exit door.

The main talk of the summer transfer window from a Leeds United perspective has been the club's striker options.

The irony of if all is that there has been talk about whether Rodrigo was the right man to lead the line.

He came in, scored goals but then dislocated his shoulder and suddenly there's a chat about what do we do without Rodrigo which was never really a chat before.

In the end, Leeds got a deal over the line for 18-year-old Italian international striker Wilfried Gnonto but you can't be definitive on him without seeing him play for Leeds United in the Premier League.

I do think given the injury problems, signing Bamba Dieng from Marseille might have sorted things out but right now, without another ball being kicked after the window, they look like they've left themselves a little bit short up top.

But it will be different if Patrick Bamford manages to have a season unlike last season where he gets his games in and if Rodrigo gets back relatively quickly.

Then there's Joe Gelhardt too and if this young lad Gnonto is part of it all going forward then the possibility that they could still be alright is absolutely there.

But right now, upfront is where they needed to strengthen and it's not been done.

It means that whoever is left and whoever comes in youngster wise has to step up as is always the case.

Today's clash at Brentford will be tough for Leeds given what they have been like so far this season.

There is obviously the emotion from what happened at Brentford on the last day of last season when the Whites stayed up and hopefully they will be on more of an equal footing in the table now and not just in pure survival mode.

But in saying that they went there in survival mode and won so maybe that's the way to approach it!

We all know what Brentford are like.

They are strong and they are physical but that doesn't belie a lack of footballing ability as a team and as individuals because they are a very good team and a very well run club.

It will be very tough but every game that Leeds play in the Premier League is always going to be very tough.

It's now up to the players that are there and the players that have come in to get going again before that break for the World Cup.

I think Leeds are definitely progressing under Jesse Marsch, the stand out game being the win at home to Chelsea.

There was a very ungracious reaction from Blues boss Thomas Tuchel but I'm sure he doesn't give a monkeys what people think of his reaction.

But Leeds were just very good in that game, hungrier, fitter, they wanted it more and deservedly put them to the sword.

I think we've seen the intensity in the games to suggest that there is a base that was built by Marcelo Bielsa but is now going to be evolved under Jesse.

It looks more like a Jesse team now than a Bielsa team and now you have Junior Firpo and Luke Ayling coming back somewhere near it and Liam Cooper will be building his way up to full match fitness with regards to the minutes under his belt.

From that element of it, there's a lot to be absolutely excited about, definitely.
