The U-15s and U-19s squads represented Oakwood on the day & both this time managed to come out as overall champions in thier respective tournaments.
This feat is the Owls first winners trophies in 12 cup final appearances, as past previous attempts in finals always ended in glorious defeat.
The U-15s won their final 6-0,after coming through their qualifying stages without conceding a single goal, while nothching a healthy 17 to top the group.
The squad ended the dreams of Hawksworth Wood Youth Centre in a rather one sided encounter, that ended with a Rodley hat-trick. Our U19s boys also came out as 4-2 winners in the later final, beating the hosts Hyde Park United in an end to end thriller, which was witnessed by a very large & appreciative crowd. Griffin bagged a brace & also hit the goal of the tournament, when smashing a rocket into the roof of the net from 12 yards, after a brilliant move involving four Owls.
Rod Christopher of Oakwood Owls said: "I think this is the turning point for the group. They all worked as a group throughout & rightly got their rewards in the end. We also played some really good football in games & today i realised that a few more pennies had dropped & it all seemed to click! Good football to feet, then intelligent runs off the ball.
Although we've played against much more difficult opposition in past tournaments, this one still had to be earned & every single one of them deserves a well earned pat on the back for how they won it together & for the respect shown towards other players & officials on the day. A fantatic day is over, but i can see so much more to come from this group over the next 12 months or so. It feels great to be double champions at last & about time too!"
He added: "I've coached some of these boys for 4 years in some cases & all along thier attitudes have been spot on. Our youth work has helped hone some these lads into very astute, technically gifted youngsters that carry a real love of the game in thier eyes. They are all always willing to listen & try new things on the ball too, which makes them a confident group. There are players are players here that i know WILL go much further in the game, regardless of which working career they choose to follow in the next 12 months. I believe that some are capable of pro football standard at some point. They are young adults who i met on the streets during youth detached work. I really do feel one or 2 of my lads possess special talent for football & i now intend to do everything i possibly can to move them to higher levels than the ones that they are currently involved in. I aim to find them better options to help them to fulfil the potential that i know is there. In a lot of ways my part is now complete with a few of these youth players. Time to go to the ones that really do know! So pro club managers out there - Please call me if you want to know more about any of them."
