A stunning fusion of stunts, drama and comedy from across the world has reachjed Roundhay Park with Europe's biggest circus comes in town for the next few weeks. Click here for more details.
The Cirque Surreal arrives at Roundhay Park straight from the Edinburgh Fringe festival, complete with circus stars from 10 countries who will perform the internationally-acclaimed production Voyagers.
From death-defying aerial acts to astounding acrobatics, gravity defying balancing to incredible juggling, the show promises thrills and spills for all ages.
A magical mix of traditional circus skills, modern dance, drama and humour, Cirque Surreal – Voyagers is set to be staged in the Theatre Big Top at Roundhay Park until Sunday, September 16.
Highlights include the Bulgarian masters of the gigantic revolving Wheel of Death, Nikolay Kakralolev and Konstadin Popov; the remarkable Lui Jai Jai and Miao Chang Wei performing the legendary "Oriental Swan" a breathtaking fusion of ballet and acrobatics, as well as the award winning Russian aerialist Victoria Antipova and teenage juggling sensation – Jamile.
This new twist to circus tradition sees Cirque Surreal follow the adventures of five Voyagers who are drawn from four continents – Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. The fifth voyager – representing the millions of stateless people – simply wants to belong.
The Arts Council of England has joined forces with Mahogany carnival costume designers to produce the show which introduces Caribbean-inspired kinetic sculptures to the world of circus.
Designed by Clary Salandy and engineered by Michael Ramdeen, the four-meter high creations give the four Voyagers a sense of place.
Mahogany supplies carnival costumes world-wide and is best known for its contribution to the Notting Hill Carnival.
And to complete the performance, audiences can enjoy facilities in the foyer with its retail outlets, licensed bars, tasty snacks, and the Sabai Chill Out Zone - the perfect place to relax with Thailand's favourite wine spritzer.
This was the Big Top chosen by Sky One for their recent reality TV series Cirque De Celebrité in which artistes from Cirque Surreal trained a group of star celebrities.
