I am honoured to say that Phil was my brother in law, but in truth he was the brother I have never had. My love for him is and always will be all consuming. My memories of him are precious and will always make my heart smile. Words are just not enough... Natalie Tate x

It is with great sadness that we am sending our sincere condolences to Roger and Liz and all the family. Liz went to school with my husband, Alan Child, and played at Phil's 30th birthday.

What a fabulous guy and what a great tragedy, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

This is a tragic loss indeed. Phil was one of the most beautiful guys you could hope to meet. Charming, full of life, kind, loving and a true family man. In an attempt to make sense of this tragic loss, it is of comfort to know that without doubt Phil lived life to the full, enjoying every single day and always having time for laughter. In fact Phil probably laughed more in his short life then most do in a lifetime.

He will be greatly missed by me and all his friends, of which he had so many. My thoughts and prayers are with his parents, brothers and girlfriend Kris. Louise Jones x

I am honoured to have known Phil for 32 years. Phil and his family are like my second family and we have spent many happy holidays together. My thoughts are with all his family at this very sad time.

My family and I had the pleasure of meeting up with Phil and his family every year in Spain, therefore us kids pretty much grew up together. Phil was a great mate, a true gentleman and we will all sorely miss his effervescent presence.

Our thoughts are with all his family and friends at this sad time.
Much love,
Catherine Bradley and family

I remember Phil very well during his time at Hatfield College,Durham University, he was always a happy and larger than life young man. Some students leave their mark and are always remembered, I am happy to say Phil was just one of those students. My thoughts are with Phil's family.

I sat next to Phil for 6 months working over in Zurich back in 1998. We used to laugh all day as we were on a similar wavelength - he used to think I could speak Italian but after a few days he worked out that I was saying the same thing all the time so I was gutted! I recall him going off snowboarding for the first time to Zermatt one weekend and he was instantly hooked. He went with some more experienced boarders and they plonked him straight onto a black run on day one! Although I havent seen Tatey for several years, I heard of his fantastic exploits through the likes of Humey, Ruelly and Maja. Phil and his smile will be hugely missed. I first met Phil when he went to Hatfield College, Durham University in 1994. I think that we met on the first night along with five or six others who remained friends for our three years at Hatfield and have been in contact ever since. Although we haven't always been great at keeping in regular contact we have always tried to meet up or call on an irregular basis - a difficult thing to do with busy lives spread around the globe. Phil was always fun and enjoyed life to the full. I spoke to him only on Friday of last week as Leeds Rhinos were beating Melbourne Storm and he was looking forward to his time in Chamonix having just arrived at the resort. This is a sad loss to all who knew him.
I have had messages of condolence which I would like to pass on from Henry McKenna (in Sydney, Australia), Mark Griffin (in New York, USA), Benedicte Bermange (in Hamilton, New Zealand), Andrew Hornby, Cleone Cockburn and Lyne & Dave Berry (Hatfield College, Durham). We will all miss Phil and our sympathies go to his parents Liz and Roger, brother Paul and his partner Kristine.

I am a school friend (Leeds Girls) & ongoing friend of Phil's and am still in shock, as I know everyone will be for some time.

Phil was just one of those all round fantastic people. Sparkling, fun, gregarious, extraordinary. The last time I saw Phil was in Sydney, before he and Kristine came back to the UK after living in Australia. Ever the gentleman, we went to a fantastic restaurant, ate great food and drank Vasse Felix all night. Exactly as I will always remember Phil. Laughing with a beer in hand. All my love & thoughts to his whole family & loving friends, Kate Walker x

Phil's partner Kristine is our best friend and we have had the pleasure of watching their relationship grow over the past seven years. Phil meant everything to Kristine who moved 12,000 miles from Australia to Leeds to be with the love of her life. Phil was one of the most patient, generous and happy men we have ever known and enjoyed the best that life had to offer every day. Our thoughts are with Phil's family and with our beautiful friend Kristine at this tragic time. We take comfort that Kristine and Phil were doing something that they loved together when this horrible tragedy occurred. Phil's death will leave a terrible hole in so many lives.

Danielle Finnigan and Davina Cassell and all of your loving friends in Australia

Phil I have nothing but the fondest memories of you, the type that will never fade and most that make me erupt into joyous laughter.

Whether it be you asking what your chances are with Kris, to watching your face drop when I told you to get your own bloody coffee and mine at the same time on our first assignment at Andersen (Melbourne), to watching you chart my love life on a white board, the huge nights out drinking and the crazy weekends skiing and dancing in the 'melting pot' at Mt Buller.

I am honoured to have worked with you, known you and to have entrusted my friend's heart to you :-).

My thoughts and prayers are with you dearest Kris and Phil's family.

My partner Simon and I had only known Phil and his family for 4 years, meeting up with them every Christmas in Barbados.

Phil was indeed the perfect gentleman, he loved life, having fun, eating out and choosing the finest wines, so much so that at his brother Paul and Natalie's wedding (Dec '07) he played a vital role. I am glad to say that, even though it was for only a short time, we are proud to have known him. Our thoughts are with Roger and Liz, Kris, Paul and Natalie and the rest of the Tate family at this sad time.

Love Sue Rifat and Simon Clark xx

If you looked up "family" in the dictionary it would direct you to look up the Tate family. The unconditional love and support however, was not exclusive. Their unquestioned protection and love is extended to their friends that touch their lives.

I was welcomed into the fold when I met Phil at University. It is very easy to eulogise the perfections of a person when they have passed away, but with Phil there are only incredible things to say. He was incredibly clever but touchingly humble, he was passionate but fiercely loyal, he was fun loving but incredibly grounded – all traits nurtured by Liz and Roger and shared by his brothers Paul, Andy and Martin. Phil was made and completed by his family. It was truly my honour to have been part of your lives.

All the love in the world – Cleo x x x

I was lucky enough to be introduced to the Tate's through my fiancée Sarah. Within 2 minutes of meeting the Tate's a beer was thrust into my hand and I received the warmest welcome anyone could imagine.

I would look forward to any occasion where I would bump into the team that was Phil, Kris, Paul, Nat, Liz, Roger, Paul, Janette and Jo. It's strange, I've only met them a few times but they embody everything that is fun, friendly, happy, good times, smiles, entertaining…a truly fantastic family.

I was only in Phil's company a handful of times but he made a huge impression. I didn't know red wine could taste so good until I met Phil. I didn't know you could entertain on a Sunday night until the early hours until I met Phil, I didn't know there was a requirement for a beer fridge, wine fridge and back up beer fridge until I met Phil. I hadn't understood the true meaning of the word BALISTIC until I met Phil.

He's been a massive part of Sarah's life for many years and an amazing friend. All the hilarious old stories are coming out………echoing my limited experiences with Phil. Fun, caring, happy, any excuse for a good time!

My love and thoughts go out to Kris, Paul, Nat, Liz, Roger and the entire Tate crew.

Memories are the legacy of love.

The last time I saw Phil was February 2007 when he came to Australia to celebrate the marriage of my son Jason with Julia. His smile will stay with me forever.

Hold on to your memories, and let them guide you during this time of sadness.

"In dying we entrust ourselves to the hearts and minds of those we love".

"When you're crying look into your heart and you'll find that you are weeping for a joy still remembered".

Reading all the tributes to Phil I am so proud to say I was one of the many that has experienced Phil and Kristine's great company. I have some wonderful and cherished memories the last time both were in Australia.

When I think of Phil yes I do think of wine and laughter, but I also think of what it means to be successful in life.

Success is:
To Laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better for having been in it, to know even some one in life has breathed easier because you have lived. To Love and to have that love returned. This is to have succeeded.

Dear Kris I can only imagine how hard it must be for you to be alone now - but the spirit does live on and you will hear the echoes of your beloved in the days to come.

To the Tate family this tragic accident has shocked us all I can only imagine the pain you must feel. My thoughts and prayers are with you and may you find the strength and courage to get you thought this difficult time.

Phil Tate was one of those people that made you laugh so much that you nearly cried. He was a fantastic mentor to me through my time at Andersen in Melbourne. Socially he was always the life of the party. I remember dancing in the melting pot, as Phil would put it, at the opening weekend of the snow season at Mount Buller. This was the start of an amazing relationship between Kristine and Phil and it was great to spend some time with both of them when I lived in London. I remember a great day we spent drinking at the Slug and Lettuce in Fulham after England beat Australia in the world cup, Phil draped in the English flag.
Kris my heart is with you and also with Phil's family and friends.
