Art is a family affair for Roundhay painter Katy Daniel.
If the 19-year-old needs a new canvas for a portrait dad Keith, a self-employed joiner, will knock up a new frame.

Her mum Jane, 40, brother Jack, 17, and even boyfriend Chris Alcock have all been happy to pose as models.

The teenager is on a one-year art foundation course at Harrogate College before going to study fine art at Bradford University.

She hopes one day to make a career as a portrait artist.

The ex-Allerton Grange student said: "I've always drawn pretty much for as long as I can remember.

"I started painting properly when I began my GCSE in art. For the GCSE I wanted to do nine paintings.

"The premise was to do each one in just one sitting. I did everybody in the family.

"I like quite expressive painting – I'm not really into realism."

A painting of her 47-year-old dad in his favourite armchair caught the eye of the judges for this year's Open Show at Leeds City Art Gallery.

The work was one of 62 chosen from almost 350 and is now on display in the Lyons Galleries in The Headrow gallery until August 10.

Katy said: "The painting of my dad was the last one in the series of nine.

"He was just sat watching the telly when I painted it. It's my favourite. I only entered into the competition after seeing one of the forms in the art gallery.

"I didn't think it had a chance. My dad thought it was a good likeness but he's a bit embarrassed that it's now hanging in the art gallery."

You can vote for your favourite at the gallery using YEP People's Choice slips.
