Cyclist leaves grandmother covdered in blood on Roundhay Park path
A hit-and-run cyclist left a grandmother on a park in Roundhay Park path covered in blood.
Edith Redhead, 81, was knocked to the ground by a fast-moving young rider in Roundhay Park and suffered a serious gash to her head.
"I watched him knock my mother-in-law down," said Wendy Redhead, "and thought: 'Oh my God, she's dead'."
Edith had come from Newcastle to celebrate her birthday and was walking up a steep path from the little lake in the park to the Mansion when the incident happened on Good Friday, March 21.
"I saw a cyclist coming fast down the path," said Mrs Redhead. "I shouted: ' Hey, that's fast,' and then saw him run over my mother-in-law. He was about 15 years old and he made no attempt to swerve and avoid her and rode off.
"Fortunately two other young cyclists stopped and one was a first aider and gave us some help."
Police were called but Mrs Redhead said that CCTV footage had failed to identify the culprit.
Mrs Redhead senior said: "I had a nasty gash on my head which was glued together at the hospital. I am very stiff and I have a bruised arm."
