Top chef Raymond Blanc has sent his best wishes to the organisers of a new farmers' market for Roundhay and Oakwood.
A group of residents is launching the monthly market around Oakwood Clock on Saturday, March 15, from 9am to 12.30pm.

Further markets will be held on the third Saturday of each month and will provide good quality, locally-sourced fresh food such as meat, fruit and vegetables – some organic – bread, cheese, fish, preserves and honey.

Organisers invited Raymond Blanc, who has opened Brasserie Blanc on Sovereign Street, Leeds, to the first event.

He replied: "I'm sorry I'm not free to celebrate the opening of the market as this is just the sort of venture we should all support and cherish.

"One of the most hopeful developments of recent years is the drive to connect those of us who live in or near cities back to the source of our food.

"I've sampled some of the products that will be offered to those of you in the area around Oakwood and Roundhay and I can tell you that you're in for some treats, as well as achieving something positive by supporting your local farmers and producers."

The market is the first initiative of Roundhay Environmental Action Project (REAP), a new organisation set up by residents concerned about their carbon footprint and wanting to develop a greener lifestyle.

REAP chairman Pat Urry said: "We hope to set up further projects, enabling people to live more sustainably, and we are open to ideas for new initiatives.

"Membership is free and people can speak to us at the market."

There is a power supply in the clock structure, so refrigeration is possible on the site.

Customers are urged to bring their own bags as the market will be a carrier-free zone.

Ward councillors Paul Wadsworth, Valerie Kendall and Matthew Lobley said the market would provide a "new dimension" to Oakwood.
Jill Jones is secretary of REAP and other leading members are Judy Summerhill and Janette Munton.
