Two Leeds fish and chip shops are in the running to be crowned the best fish takeaway in the UK.

The Bearded Sailor in Pudsey and the Fish Bank in Sherburn in Elmet have been named as finalists in the Top 20 Takeaway of the Year category of the National Fish and Chip Awards.

The Bearded Sailor in Pudsey is consistently ranked as one of the best fish and chip shops in Leeds on TripAdvisor, with customers praising the fresh fish, crispy batter and fluffy chips. The Fish Bank has received similarly glowing praise, with one customer saying it was “probably the best fish and chips I have ever had”.

Whiteheads Fish and Chips in Hornsea and Elmet and Auckley Friery in Doncaster have also made the shortlist. The 20 finalists were selected following an extensive judging process of the top 40 fish and chip takeaways, which were announced last month.

The Takeaway of the Year category is sponsored by Pukka Pies, McWhinneys, Smales, VA Whitley, Friars Pride, Henry Colbecks and B D Signs. The winner will be announced at the National Fish and Chip Awards, hosted by The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on February 28 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

Andrew Crook, NFFF president, said: “We received such a high standard of applications this year, for this category in particular, making it a very difficult yet rewarding judging process. The top 20 really demonstrate a strong commitment to the fish and chip industry and to the British public, so we’re thrilled to see so many shortlisted from across the country.

"Congratulations to everyone involved, this is a massive achievement in itself.”
