With families, well-wishers and regular attenders, there were just under 300 people at the service.

"You could say the church was packed," declared Rev David Pickering, Minister of St Andrew's.

"The first wedding here, when we were called Roundhay Congregational Church and worshipped in what is now the Memorial Hall, was in 1904.

"Since then 586 couples have been married here. The first wedding in the present church was in 1909 and the niece of the groom in that 1908 wedding was at the service on Sunday," said David.

"Among those attending on Sunday was Hilda Phillis, who married in 1948 and is a member of St Andrew's to this day. There were Bill and Margaret Sedman, whose Diamond Wedding anniversary is in May. From the 1960s there were Tony and Elizabeth Breckin, the middle of three generations marrying at St Andrew's.

"Many who couldn't attend wrote in, like Betty Briggs, who married the son of the minister in 1940, and Kathleen Clark, a St Andrew's member who married in 1945."

Rev Pickering added: "It was a wonderful service with music and readings appropriate to weddings. It was an opportunity to renew promises and to bring before God hurts and heartaches. Afterwards there was a group photograph, a chance to see the registers and – at a safe distance – cake."
